Balance — Natural Science Institutions
Balance — Natural Science Institutions
Obviously, the more income received as a result of an institution’s own Program Service (PS) effort, the less they rely on Donations. The top 10 receive 61% from PS, covering 83% of its expense. That’s similar to Arts at 80%. Both NatSci and Art Top 10 are much more successful at expense recovery than average, 22% and 46% respectively.
It might be assumed that the larger CANs are capable of producing better exhibits that proportionately attract more public income. It is not true in practice. The Top 10 average Total Revenue of $6.9 million while the Bottom 10 average $46 million.
These charts relate the sources of CAN income among the three categories: Program Services, Donations, and Business activities.
The first chart, for example, shows that the 10 CANs with the greatest income from Program Services average 61%.
Those in the top ten earn 6% of their income from Business activities and 33% from Donations on average
Similarly, the CANs earning the least from Program Services, 12% on average, earn 20% and 68% from Business and Donations espectively.
